My Favorite Holiday Events in Arizona

As a Phoenix native, I've attended many of these events, and the following are my favorite!

Zoo Lights at the Phoenix Zoo

This holds a special place in my heart, and my family has been attending for years.  Lots of lights and a festive atmosphere get you in the holiday spirit fast.  You won't see many animals, and be prepared to purchase some light up toys for the kids, but walking around in the crisp air looking the displays is tons of fun.

World of Illumination  - a drive through holiday light show in Glendale and Tempe

The displays of millions of lights is truly magical.  Be cautioned: if you get claustrophobic or have restless kids, this may not be a good choice.  The line of cars moves very slowly so be prepared to keep kids occupied with carols and snacks.

Christmas at the Princess

A winter wonderland at the Fairmont Princess resort in Scottsdale will give you all the magic of snow and ice without leaving the desert.

I have mixed feelings about this event - it can be tons of fun, but many of the things to do have a ticket cost in addition to the general admission and parking fees.  Ice skating, fire tables, ice sculptures, photos with Santa, and riding the ferris wheel will all cost you an addition per person fee.

Desert Botanical Garden - Las Noches de las Luminarias

Enjoy an evening filled with sparkling luminarias and twinkling holiday lights. Musical performances, entertainment and holiday delights line the Garden’s iconic trails for a picture-perfect night.  I love this event for its low-key, beautiful walks.  If you are looking for a less stimulating, lovely evening, this is your choice.

Neighborhood Holiday Lights

This, by far, is my favorite thing to do, as it brings me back to my childhood when it was really the only thing to do! Every year the Arizona Republic newspaper publishes a map of the best neighborhood holiday displays.  Grab the map and some hot chocolate and drive you and your family around various metro neighborhoods looking at the creativity and holiday spirit.  Many neighborhoods will let you park and walk, and often the displays are coordinated with holiday music on your car radio.  Tons of fun!

Visit www.azcentral.com In early December for the map
